Our project explores 10 case study churches, undertaking heritage recording surveys and social value surveys of each of these at-risk churches.

How we chose these 10 churches

To help prioritise churches for our case studies, we have looked at a range of ways that heritage organisations and researchers understand and assess the value of church buildings. This includes considering architectural, historic, aesthetic, and community value, as well as the role churches continue to play in local places and identities. We have also drawn on previous surveys and lists of significant churches, alongside discussions with our Heritage Action Group, to help shape our approach.

Alongside this, we have been identifying churches that may be at risk or facing change by consulting a range of available data sources, including information on churches for sale, vacant buildings, and churches undergoing transition. Together, these approaches help us select case studies that reflect both the richness of Scotland’s church heritage and the challenges many buildings and communities are currently facing.
